Creating Space for Difference in a World That Craves Belonging<\/p>\n
In Martina McBride\u2019s song, she says, \u201cLove is the only house big enough for all the pain in the world.\u201d
And I believe she\u2019s right. We all need a little more love.<\/p>\n
I choose to see the world through love and compassion. I choose to use quantum thinking\u2014the ability of the mind to view an issue from all sides. I see a world full of diversity. And by the grace of my Creator, I was born who I am, where I am.
But it could\u2019ve been different. I could easily have been born into poverty\u2026 into homelessness\u2026 into inequality, hunger, or \u201cotherness.\u201d<\/p>\n
So what is normal, really?
Is it only what I believe? Only what I think?<\/p>\n
There are over eight billion people on this planet, and not one of them has the same fingerprints\u2014not even identical twins. Why would we ever expect anyone else to think or feel the same as we do? We are as unique as our fingerprints. Our genetics and life experiences shape who we are.<\/p>\n
Sometimes I wonder\u2014what happened in your life that taught you indifference?<\/p>\n
I try to see everyone equally and without judgment. I haven\u2019t always succeeded, but I\u2019m learning. Life continues to teach me. And as Maya Angelou said, \u201cWhen we know better, we do better.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Danger of Narrow Thinking<\/p>\n
The lack of quantum thinking is everywhere.
I hear people say:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou’re listening to the wrong station\u2014this is the only right one.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing that way is just wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Or my personal favorite: \u201cI\u2019ll hurt or punish you for not thinking like me.\u201d<\/p>\n
What are we teaching our children when we speak and act like this? That conformity equals value? That diversity of thought makes you wrong\u2014or crazy?<\/p>\n
It sounds a little hypocritical to me. (Okay, maybe that\u2019s judgmental\u2026 I\u2019m still learning.)<\/p>\n
I want my children to grow up with the freedom to think for themselves\u2014even when their beliefs don\u2019t match mine. I want them to question the world, to seek out compassion, and to live outside the tiny boxes we\u2019re so often handed.
Because the only constant is change.<\/p>\n
Inclusion or Exclusion: Your Choice<\/p>\n
Do you want to create more inclusion\u2014or more exclusion?<\/p>\n
Rewiring the neuro-linguistic patterns we\u2019ve built up over a lifetime takes real courage. It asks us to let go of what no longer serves us. But even people whose beliefs are carved deep\u2014Grand Canyon deep\u2014can form new pathways.
We all can.<\/p>\n
No one makes you be someone you\u2019re not.
You are who you are\u2014and you have the choice to love like Jesus did.<\/p>\n
You were born a child of the Creator.
You were brought here to shine your light.
You were made to make a difference.<\/p>\n
Life isn\u2019t always easy. But love and compassion?
They\u2019re always enough.<\/p>\n
